Brain Rules

Now that you have reviewed the three brain networks and how UDL works with each network, we will review what brain scientists have uncovered about the brain that every parent, and teacher should know.

How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget – and so important to repeat new knowledge?

Dr. John Medina is a developmental molecular biologist and research consultant. He is an affiliate Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is also the director of the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research at Seattle Pacific University.

In the book Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work.

Watch this video describe one research project focusing on rule #5 repeat to remember in a 3rd grade math class.

To continue learning about Brain Rules, you will complete an activity where you can choose to either:

1.   Choose 2-3 Brain Rules and discuss with a partner the application to education.

OR

2. Spend some time investigating some of the interactives the brain rules on John Medina’s website.
